Work Permit
We support you in applying for or extending your work permit.
Do you want to apply for a work permit or extend your existing work permit? Sttarhal Immigration & Services Inc. supports you at every step of the process. Canada offers many work opportunities for skilled foreign workers, backed by favourable immigration policies.
There are three types of work permits:
1. Employer-specific work permit, also called a closed work permit:
An employer-specific work permit allows you to work in Canada for a specific employer and under the conditions listed on your permit, including the following:
- The name of the employer you are authorized to work for
- The length of time you are authorized to work
- The location where you are authorized to work (if applicable)
Before submitting an employer-specific work permit application, your employer must provide you with:
- A copy of your employment contract
- Either of the following:
- A copy of a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA)
- A job offer number (for workers exempt from the LMIA)
2. Open work permit:
The open work permit is a type of work permit that allows foreign workers to work for any employer in Canada, without needing a specific job offer. It is generally issued to foreign workers already in Canada who meet certain eligibility criteria, such as spouses of temporary residents (workers or students) or university graduates.
3. Post-Graduation Work Permit:
You may be eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) if you graduated from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) and want to remain in Canada temporarily to work. It allows international students who graduated from a designated Canadian learning institution to work in Canada to gain professional experience.
The post-graduation work permit is not renewable and has a maximum validity of 3 years, depending on the length of your study program.
- Advantage: the professional experience gained makes it easier to obtain permanent residence in Canada for students who wish to reside in Canada permanently.
- Note: graduating from a DLI does not automatically make you eligible for a PGWP. Also, not all study programs automatically qualify for a PGWP.
