Study Permit: Updated Financial Resources Requirements
17 September 2026
▎ To obtain a study permit, IRCC requires proof of sufficient funds — without needing to work in Canada — to cover tuition, living expenses (for you and any accompanying family members), and round-trip transportation.
▎ Accepted documents:
▎ - Tuition: payment receipts, student loans, scholarships or government-funded programs
▎ - Employment & support: recent pay stubs, sponsor letter detailing employment and financial commitment
▎ - Bank accounts & income: Canadian bank account, GIC from a Canadian institution, 6-month bank statements showing proof of income source, retirement funds, rental income
▎ You must show funds for your first year of study; for programs longer than one year, you must also explain how you'll finance the remaining years.
▎ Living expense amounts (effective September 1, 2026, outside Quebec):
▎ - 1 person: $23,448 CAD/year
▎ - 3 people: $35,888 CAD/year
▎ - Each additional person beyond 7: $6,318 CAD
▎ Applicants destined for Quebec must meet the requirements of the relevant provincial ministry.
